Women In Prison Network

We are very pleased to announce the formation of the new
Australian Women in Prison Network.
The Network aims to protect the human rights of women in the prison system
in Australia, improve quality of life and more responsive and effective
approaches to women charged with or convicted of breaching criminal law
in Australia.
The Australia Women in Prison Network (AWIPN) is a national
peak body which aims to provide and effective national voice on women
and prison issues. The Network aims to empower women in prison and promote
new ways of meeting the rights and needs of women in prison.
MISSION
Working together with and for women in the criminal justice system.
AIM
To be instrumental in affecting beneficial social change for women in
the criminal justice system in Australia.
VISION
Working together to improve the quality of life of women in the criminal
justice system in Australia and thereby improve the quality of life of
society.
PURPOSE
· As the women in the criminal justice system national peak body,
the network seeks to influence the agenda in the criminal justice system.
Informed by its members, and consistent with its values and vision, the
network aims to establish directions and voice positions that promote
interest of the criminal justice system sector and/or its members and
thereby contribute to social and cultural change.
· The purpose of the network is detailed in the values
and vision. All decisions of the network shall be consistent with these
documents.
OBJECTS
· To promote the interests of women in the criminal justice system
throughout Australia.
· To enable the participation of and the collective
self advocacy by women in the criminal justice system, in the network
and the wider community.
· To advocate with and for women in the criminal
justice system.
· To lobby to achieve long term social change in
the interest of women in the criminal justice system.
· To support and encourage the development of new
means of meeting the rights and needs of women in the criminal justice
system.
· To contribute to the development of the network
through networking, research and information provision.
· To function in a manner consistent with the vision
of the network.
MEMBERSHIP
Membership may be granted to non-government organisations,
non-government workers and women in the criminal justice system who have:
1. agreed to support the objects and vision summary
of the network, and
2. paid the prescribed membership fee.
An application requesting membership will be made
in writing, signed by the applicant or relevant officer of the organisation.
Any other individual or organisation interested in the Network is entitled
to become a subscriber to the Network. The fees for membership of, or
subscription to, the Network will be - the prescribed subscribers membership
fee. Any fully completed request for membership of the Network accompanied
by the relevant fee will be considered by the networks executive at the
meeting following its receipt; and the networks executive may determine
at this meeting the admission, further investigation or rejection of applicant.
Financial subscriber means any individual or organisation interested in
the work of the network, including government who cannot be a financial
member.
